Regulators: Shrimping open 7 days a week

Regional fisheries regulators have opened each day of the week to shrimp fishing in Maine in light of a small catch so far this season.

The Portland Press Herald reported the expansion also lifts a 500-pound daily catch limit for trappers, which means shrimp fishermen using traps will have an unlimited daily catch until April 12.

Before the decision from the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission Friday, trawl fishermen were allowed to fish four days a week and trap fishermen six days a week.

The season is now set to close April 12 unless the harvest yields 85% of the total catch limit of 1.38 million pounds before that date.

That total catch limit was drastically reduced this year, down 75% from the 5.3-million-pound limit in place for the previous season.
