Report: Limits on Maine hydropower expansion

A new report released by the Governor’s Energy Office on Thursday said there aren’t many opportunities to expand Maine’s hydropower generation at existing dams.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the report found there were only 56 megawatts of power that could be utilized if existing facilities are upgraded or restarted, adding to the state’s existing 750-megawatt capacity. However, the report said such initiatives won’t have much of a chance because of economics and challenges posed by federal and state regulations.

The report, authored by Pittsfield-based consultant firm Kleinschmidt, recommended, among other things, that the state should re-create a “state hydropower coordinator” to encourage hydropower development. It said there are significant opportunities in developing facilities that generate power through waves, tides or rivers.
