Sanford, Biddeford hospital merger to save $2M

The leader of the newly formed Southern Maine Health Care said consolidation and closures at Goodall Hospital in Sanford and Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford will save the combined organization around $2 million a year.

The Portland Press Herald reported President and CEO Ed McGeachey said the savings will come from moves like shifting neonatal care to Biddeford and consolidating sleep disorder care to a clinic in Kennebunk.

McGeachey said the $2 million savings will chip into a $4.3 million budget shortfall expected in the wake of the merger. He said the combined board of directors has given him a year to cover the deficit at the health care network that is the largest in York County.
