Scarborough's Michaud family has donated $500,000 to Maine Medical Center's ongoing capital campaign for its $543 million expansion and modernization project.

In honor of the gift, the entrance to the new Malone Family Tower, now under construction on Congress Street, will become the Michaud Family Plaza.

The family has deep roots in Scarborough, going back to when Richard Sr. started a home-based snack food distribution business in 1980 he ran with his sons and later merged with the country's second-largest snack-food distributor.

Today, brothers Richard Michaud Jr. and Peter Michaud are part of the development team at the Downs, a mixed-used community at the site of the former Scarborough Downs harness racing track.

The Michaud family's half-million dollar donation to Maine Med was made by siblings Andrea Michaud Reali, Patrick, Richard Jr., Tara and Peter in honor of their late parents. Their mother, Maria Michaud, received end-of-life care at the Portland hospital.

"We lost our mother when we were just kids and one thing she told us before she passed was to 'stick together,' so that's what we did," Richard Michaud Jr. said. "My siblings and I will always be grateful for the care she and Dad received at Maine Med, and this was the best way to demonstrate that gratitude."

‘Patient-centered’ care

Maine Medical Center launched its $150 million capital campaign in 2021. The institution raised its fundraising goal to $170 million this past June after receiving a $2 million gift. To date, the hospital has raised $173.1 million in its ongoing campaign, Maine spokeswoman Caroline Cornish said Thursday.

While Maine Med has not set a new fundraising goal, the institution continues to seek support "to meet our workforce development goals and invest in modern facilities," Cornish said.

Maine Medical Center President Jeff Sanders said, "Maine Medical Center is fortunate to have the support of community members like the Michauds as we invest in our vision of working together so our communities are the healthiest in America."

"Gifts like this allow us to provide an environment of high-quality, safe, patient-centered care," he added.

Maine Medical Center topped a list of Maine's largest hospitals ranked by number of licensed acute-care beds in the 2022 Mainebiz Book of Lists.
