Scenic railroad reports strong growth

Maine Eastern Railroad, which makes runs between Brunswick and Rockland, recently said it carried 26% more passengers this year than in 2006, the second year it has announced double-digit, year-over-year growth.

The railroad, a subsidiary of Morristown and Erie Railway in New Jersey, carried more than 17,000 passengers in 2007, according to a press release from the company. While ticket prices remained the same from 2006 to 2007, diesel prices increased as much as 30%, the release said.

The passenger rail service was established in 2004 after Gov. John Baldacci requested a special passenger train visit Rockland that summer.
