Scout Partners deal boosts Maine yacht maker

Investment firm Scout Partners LLC, which owns the Southwest Harbor-based Hinckley Co., has purchased a Rhode Island yacht maker that will give the Maine operation access to new parts and technical advice.

The Ellsworth American reported Scout purchased the Rhode Island-based Hunt Yachts, Inc., for an undisclosed price. The investment firm said Hunt Yachts will retain its president, Peter Van Lancker, and will continue to operate as Hunt Yachts LLC. The paper reported that Hinckley Co., which Scout purchased in 2011, will now have direct access to Hunt parts.

In early 2012, when the company launched a new line of luxury boats, Hinckley employed 230 people in Maine and around 200 more at other East Coast locations.
