In the first of a series of votes, Searsport's Planning Board indicated that a controversial proposal for a 23-million gallon propane storage tank does not fit within local zoning ordinances for its proposed location.
The Bangor Daily News reported the board took its first vote late Thursday after prolonged hearings over the $40 million proposal from DCP Midstream that has put a national spotlight on local officials' high-stakes decision.
The paper reported that the Thursday vote was the first of many and that an ultimate decision on whether the plan can move ahead will depend on the town's 18 performance standards outlined in the town's land use ordinance.
But the paper reported that opponents of the tank were encouraged by the unanimous vote Wednesday evening, saying it established that the project doesn't jibe with existing land use ordinances for that commercial zone.
Planning Board Chairman Bruce Probert told the paper that after reviewing all of the local planning standards, the board "will revisit all of it" before making a final decision, which he said he expects this spring.
The board is scheduled to meet again next week to continue reviewing the project.
