Senate approves insurance head

Governor John Baldacci's nomination for insurance superintendent was approved by the Senate yesterday in a party-line vote.

The Senate voted 18-17 to confirm the nomination of Mila Kofman, with the Democratic majority in favor of the nominee, the Sun Journal reported. Earlier this week, the Legislature's Insurance and Financial Services Committee voted 8-5 along party lines to recommend Kofman's appointment. The Senate would have needed a two-thirds majority to reverse the committee's recommendation, the paper reported.
