Start-up charcuterie business expanding in Rockport

A start-up charcuterie maker in Rockport plans an expansion in its existing space.

The PenBay Pilot reported that Oliver Perkins started his boutique charcuterie, called “A Small Good,” in the State of Maine Cheese building at 461 Commercial St. in Rockport — making his debut in early 2017 at local farmers’ markets, retail outlets and restaurants. He told the newspaper that plans are in the works to expand A Small Good within the same building and he hopes to add an additional staff member this fall.

Perkins and wife Kelly closed on a 150-acre property in Hope and plan to raise pigs for A Small Good.

Perkins’ business is on-trend. In 2016, high-end chef Matthew Secich opened a shop called Charcuterie in Unity, in a converted cabin tucked away in a pine forest. According to Cargill Salt's In Perspective, handmade charcuterie is enjoying something of a renaissance as the appetizer most likely to generate buzz for restaurants.
