Tenant found for former Houlton Int'l facility

Houlton's economic development arm on Monday signed a deal that will bring a local business into the long vacant former Houlton International facility.

Shiretown Development Corp. has signed a purchase-and-sale agreement with AKTEM Business Park Inc., which is owned by Houlton native Chad Walton, according to the Bangor Daily News. AKTEM is a six-year-old manufacturing and development company that builds and leases steel buildings, completes metal finishing for turbines and firearms, and develops affordable housing, according to the paper. The business will pay $150,000 over three years for the building, though that price could drop depending on the number of jobs it creates. The business expects to create as many as 40 new jobs once it moves into the facility, the paper said.

The Shiretown Development Corp. purchased the former Houlton International Corp. facility four years ago for $161,000 with the intention of using it to attract another large business to Houlton.
