UMaine lab unveils blast-proof building

The University of Maine's Advanced Engineered Wood Composites Center in Orono is scheduled this morning to unveil a new blast-resistant building with potential military applications.

UMaine engineers, including undergraduate and graduate students, developed and patented a composite coating that, when applied to construction materials, gives the building properties that will allow it to withstand blasts and severe weather, according to a press release. The technology has potential applications in the military, homeland security and for hurricane-resistant construction.

This most recent technology follows the AEWC Center's development of ballistic tent panels, which were presented to the U.S. Army last year.
