UMaine System faces steep cuts, layoffs

The University of Maine System faces a $36 million budget gap that Chancellor James Page said could prompt elimination of up to 165 positions.

The Bangor Daily News reported the state university system estimates that the University of Southern Maine will need to make up $14 million of the cuts to its fiscal year 2015 budget and the University of Maine at Orono will be responsible for finding $12 million to trim.

The newspaper reported that a team of 31 faculty, staff and community members will present recommendations Friday for just how each campus should make up its share of the budget savings.

In late February, a consultant’s report found that the university faces longer-term financial challenges as well, with up to $400 million in deferred facilities maintenance and a lower ratio of students to square feet of facilities than other public universities.
