UMPI gets $$ to boost minority enrollment

The University of Maine at Presque Isle has been chosen as one of six New England colleges, and the only one in Maine, to take part in an ambitious project to boost the number of minorities and low-income students graduating with four-year degrees.

The Nellie Mae Education Foundation, based in Quincy, Mass., will give the university $100,000 for the initial phase of the multi-year program, which is designed to increase the academic success and graduation rates of students from under-represented populations, according to a press release from NMEF. The university could receive nearly $1 million in funding over the course of the five-year endeavor.

As part of the program, the university will work with students and representatives from the Aroostook Band of Micmacs and the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, who may be first-generation college students or from families with limited incomes, according to the Bangor Daily News.
