United Midcoast Charities, a provider of financial and organizational support to nonprofits in Knox and Waldo counties, has launched a free online portal to connect community members with volunteer opportunities in the region.

"Nonprofits told us they were not just looking for more volunteers, but for the right volunteers," said Becca Gildred, executive director of the Camden-based nonprofit. "At the same time, many people in our community want to help but are not sure where to start. This brings those needs together in one simple place.”

Gildred said the hub is designed to support and enhance existing volunteer recruitment efforts, not replace them.

Community members can use the hub by completing a short online questionnaire about their interests, skills and availability. Participating nonprofits can then search volunteer profiles to identify people who may be a good match for their programs.

United Midcoast Charities, founded 80 years ago, has awarded more than $12.5 million to nonprofits focused on providing food, housing, health, safety and economic security to community residents.

The organization said that more than 42% of those living in the region can’t afford basic needs, including food, housing and health care.

Statistics from the Maine State Housing Authority show that the average monthly rent is unaffordable to more than 58% of the population, and that home ownership is out of reach for two-thirds of Knox County residents and 63% of those living in Waldo County.
