The city of Portland has received $2.1 million in federal funding for roadway, pedestrian and bicycle safety projects along Brighton Avenue.

The Safe Streets and Roads for All grant will fund a six-month demonstration project along a one-mile stretch of Brighton Avenue/Route 25, between the Barron Center at City Hospital Drive and Wayside Road.

Plans include reconfiguring the roadway, restriping, adding a center turn lane, improving lighting and installing buffered bicycle lanes, planters and vehicle feedback signs.

The project will also include a public education campaign, speed studies and a findings report to guide future capital investments and initiatives under the Greater Portland Vision Zero action plan, which aims to eliminate roadway fatalities and serious injuries by 2045.

City Manager Danielle West said the funding will "enhance roadway safety for all users while providing valuable data to inform long-term transportation improvements.”

Conceptual design is planned to begin in fall 2026, with final design and installation projected by June 2027.
