Vacationland ranked among top states to retire

With high scores for neighborhood safety, health care and arts and entertainment options, Vacationland outshines every state but one as a place to spend one’s golden years, according to new rankings released by personal finance website Bankrate.

The barometer puts Vacationland in the No. 2 spot for retirement, just behind New Hampshire.

Other New England states in the top 10 were Vermont at No. 4 and Rhode Island at No. 6.

Further down the list, Connecticut was No. 13 and Massachusetts was No. 16.

Rankings are based on factors including affordability, weather, neighborhood safety, health care and other factors deemed important to Americans in a national opinion survey.

“Maine turned in a fine performance, with strong scores in a number of categories,” researchers noted.

Besides ranking tops for the number of senior residents, with 23% of residents age 65 and older, the Pine Tree State ranked second in neighborhood safety, owing in part a low rate of violent crime.

Maine also ranked third for health care and fourth for arts, entertainment and recreation establishments.

However, like its neighbor New Hampshire, Maine scored poorly in the weather category, coming in at No. 41 with one of the lowest levels of sunlight exposure on average in the country, according to Bankrate.

New England and the West stood out as the most desirable regions for retirees, while four Sun Belt states were deemed least desirable with Louisiana dead last at No. 50.
