Whitten Architects recognized for design excellence for three Maine residences

Seven architects honored for design Courtesy Whitten Architects Whitten Architects won three AIA design awards at a ceremony held in Augusta.

Portland-based Whitten Architects was recognized for three residential design projects at the American Institute of Architects Maine design awards, held last week at Governor Hill Mansion in Augusta.

Awards recipients are selected by a jury of nationally respected peers, following the AIA Framework for Design Excellence, which “values beauty alongside integrity and environmental stewardship.”

Whitten’s Narrows project, located in the Portland area, earned the top Honor Award in the single family residential category for the second consecutive year. The jury commented: “The Narrows is so well executed that one can almost miss how successful the architect was in crafting it. It makes architecture seem easy when in fact the siting, topography, circulation, views, landscaping, and scale are a complex solution set for a modern plan clad in well-detailed vernacular forms and materials.”

The firm’s Tidehead Woods House won a Citation Award for its design of three homes within a larger family retreat in the Midcoast region.

Whitten won the AIA Maine Architrave Award for the second year in a row, for its Falls Pasture project. The award celebrates "excellence in traditional design through the thoughtful adaptation of tradition to address 21st-century needs."

Whitten Architects’ 15-member team focuses on residential design, and was founded in 1986 by principal Rob Whitten.
