Portland Museum of Art hired Sarah Timm as the head of education for its Peggy L. Osher Art Study Room.
Timm has over a decade of experience in museum education, strategic planning and interpretive programming.
“My leadership at the PMA will be grounded in three core values,” said Timm. “Range of perspective, commitment to collaborative creativity and a clarity of vision that positions the PMA as a vital community partner. I am excited to apply my experience designing interpretive strategies that foster dialogue and discovery.”
Timm joins the museum from the Maine Maritime Museum, where she has served as the director of education since 2016. In this role, Timm developed an exhibition addressing Maine’s maritime connections to slavery. She also launched the Maritime Museum's first high school internship program, Green Teens, focused on environmental storytelling.
She also served as the founding chair of the Maritime Museum's committee on diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility and secured funding from institutions including the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Timm received her master's in art history from Florida State University and her bachelor's in art history and graphic arts from Elon University.
“Sarah brings a remarkable blend of strategic vision, creativity and inclusive leadership,” said Shalini Le Gall, PMA’s deputy director for curatorial affairs. “Her approach to education and interpretation is rooted in dialogue and connection, qualities that align perfectly with the PMA’s mission and values.”
The museum plans a major expansion in coming years. On April 1, a judge gave the PMA the OK to tear down the former Children’s Museum & Theater of Maine building at 142 Free St. to make way for 60,000-square-foot expansion.
