Growing pains: Maine life sciences, biohealth startups hustle to raise capital in a tough environment

Even during good times, early-stage life sciences and biohealth businesses in Maine frequently have to work harder than their peers in bigger markets to woo investors.

Last week Oxbow Brewing, a Newcastle-based brewer with a bottling plant in Portland and a beer garden in Oxford, announced plans to acquire Portland-based Rising Tide Brewing Co. The deal is expected to be finalized this month.

Maine has been one of the states with the biggest boom in craft brewing operations. According to the Maine Brewers Guild, the number of establishments grew from 35 in 2009 to 165 by 2022. 

But there has been concern in the brewing industry overall that consolidation is inevitable, with big brewers buying smaller labels and more mergers among peers expected.
