$6.62 million Falmouth Memorial Library renovation to start

A $6.62 million library renovation plan that began in 2013 will get underway this weekend, when ground is broken for the Falmouth Memorial Library’s expansion, which will add 8,000 square feet and remove two old sections.

The library will be 18,750 square feet once the project is finished next year.

The project involves removing the 1965 addition to the library, as well as the 111-year-old Iverson House, which have structural problems. The library extends from the house, which is at the intersection of Lunt and Depot roads, and the main entrance of the library is now on Lunt Road.

“New construction will allow for larger, welcoming and more flexible spaces for both adults and children,” a news release about the groundbreaking said.

The new design will offer increased adult collection space, expanded youth services, collection and programming space, small study and meeting rooms, improved air quality and energy efficiency, the release said.

While the work is underway, the library will operate out of the Mason-Motz Community Center, 190 Middle Road.

In 2013, Scott Simons Architects was hired to complete a feasibility study for the library expansion and renovation, and residents approved a $2.81 million bond issue in November 2014.

The project is designed by Scott Simons Architects, of Portland, and Ledgewood Construction, of South Portland, is the construction manager.

Both were hired because of their extensive experience with library renovations, including the Portland Public Library, the news release said.

Over the last three years, the two firms have helped develop the plan, with the library Board of Trustees has raised the money for it.

A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled to take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, after a 9 a.m. to noon moving sale.
