Ballot to include $76M in bond requests

Maine voters will see nearly $76 million in bond issues on the Nov. 6 ballot, mostly for highways, bridges and other transportation projects.

The Associated Press reported that Mainers last saw bond issues on a ballot in 2010. Besides transportation projects, the proposed state borrowing would fund capital improvements for higher education, clean water projects and land conservation efforts.

The bond measures include:

  • $51.5 million proposed for transportation projects that include shipping port upgrades in Searsport and Eastport, transit buses, airports and improvements for medical evacuation helicopter facilities.
  • $11.3 million for capital improvements in the University of Maine System, community college system and Maine Maritime Academy.
  • $7.9 million to replenish a loan fund for public drinking water systems and wastewater treatment facilities.
  • $5 million to purchase land conservation easements.

The AP reports that as of June 30 the state owed $472 million in general obligation bonds and has authorized but not issued an additional $41 million in bonds.
