Credit union assets up 6%

Assets at Maine's credit unions increased to $4.4 billion in 2007, a 6% increase from the previous year, according to the Maine Credit Union League.

Shares for the MCUL's 68 members rose 6.46% to $3.7 billion during that period, while total loans grew 3.95% to $3.1 billion. Jon Paradise, public affairs manager for the MCUL, said the figures rose in part because credit unions expanded some services, such as its network of surcharge-free ATMs and its cooperative branches program, which allows members to make transactions at any participating credit union.
