East Brown Cow received ClimateWork Maine’s climate performance award during the Summit on Maine’s Economy and Climate Change in Augusta on May 8.

The award was presented to Tim Soley, East Brown Cow’s president and CEO.

Now in its second year, the award goes to a business implementing climate-friendly actions in its operations or through its supply chain.

In 2024, the inaugural award was given to Wyman’s of Maine.

For more than 20 years, East Brown Cow has used LED lighting across its more than one million square feet of office, retail, parking and hospitality space in Portland.

East Brown Cow was the first business to introduce publicly accessible charging stations in downtown Portland. For the past seven years, its team of maintenance staff has been driving electric vehicles.

It has built six solar arrays, including one on the roof of the Old Port Square Parking Garage.

In 2024, East Brown Cow invested in an off-site solar farm in the Kennebec County town of Sidney. The 11-acre parcel has 4,928 solar panels, which is expected to offset nearly 3.2 million pounds of carbon dioxide each year.

“East Brown Cow was not only among the first real estate developers to embrace clean, efficient energy systems in Portland, but also to recognize their environmental benefits and cost savings as strategic opportunities,” said Jeff Marks, ClimateWork Maine’s executive director. “Their investments inspire others to follow and showcase their commitment to community sustainability and resilience.”
