Fate of Husson law school in court's hands

Husson College got the opportunity Friday to argue in front of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court that the graduates from its proposed law school should be able to practice law in Maine.

The Bangor college wants to launch its law school this fall with 30 students. But it first needs the go ahead from five justices on the state's highest court that its law students will be able to take the Maine bar exam, according to the Bangor Daily News. Supporters of Husson's plan, including members of the Maine Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys, say the school will ease a dearth of lawyers in rural Maine. But the Maine State Bar Association and the Maine Trial Lawyers Association oppose the school, citing the fact that Husson does not plan to seek accreditation from the American Bar Association, the paper said. The school says the accreditation process and requirements are cost prohibitive for a small law school.

The University of Maine School of Law in Portland is currently the only law school in Maine, and is ABA accredited. There is no deadline for the five justices to make a decision on the matter, the paper said.
