Legislators support slot machine bill

A bipartisan legislative committee has approved a proposed bill to allow the Penobscot Nation to operate up to 400 slot machines in Old Town.

Nine of the 13 members of the Legislature's Legal and Veterans Affairs Committee present at a Monday work session supported the amended bill, claiming Hollywood Slots in Bangor was hurting the Penobscot's bingo business on Indian Island, the Bangor Daily News reported. Gov. John Baldacci has come out strongly against the bill, arguing that any expansion of gambling in the state requires voter approval.

Last year, the Senate and House approved the bill, but it was delayed and carried over to the current session after the Passamaquoddy Tribe's initiated their push for legalized gambling last year.
