MaineHousing commits $2.5M to Lewiston nonprofit for 24/7 emergency shelter

Kaydenz Kitchen, a nonprofit food pantry at 551 Lincoln St. in Lewiston, said MaineHousing has confirmed the release of $2.5 million in funding to support creation of an emergency shelter.

Plans call for conversion of a 14,117-square-foot building at 70 Horton St. into the city’s first  24/7 "low-barrier" shelter.

With a goal of housing up to 40 people, the shelter will provide access to services without preconditions such as sobriety or program participation.

“MaineHousing’s investment in this project demonstrates their commitment to equitable housing solutions and community-based partnerships,” said Kevin Boilard, president of Kaydenz Kitchen. “This shelter is not just about beds. It’s about safety, dignity and offering people a pathway forward.”

The project also received commitments from the city of Lewiston, Lewiston Housing Authority and community partners. The year-round shelter is expected to open at the start of 2026, following renovations and staffing preparations.

The building is situated on nearly an entire city block and includes parking, a well-maintained structure and a flexible layout, according to a listing by Androvise Realty.

Kaydenz Kitchen was founded as a food pantry and meal delivery service, but has continued to grow, according to Community Concepts, a community action agency with an office in Lewiston.

Last year, Kaydenz received $279,693 from MaineHousing’s Emergency Housing Relief Fund to set up a winter warming shelter, providing shelter, safety and resources to more than 350 people.

Earlier this year, Kaydenz launched a  thrift store, ALTER 207, with proceeds going toward the shelter.
