The future Maine Life Sciences Incubator aims to bring mentors, workforce development programs and investors under one umbrella to support entrepreneurs in the $2.3 billion sector, which spans nearly 600 companies from biotechnology to medical devices and marine science.

“By supporting the establishment of a state-of-the art life sciences incubator, we can help accelerate the creation and growth of biotechnology startups here in Maine,” Gov. Janet Mills said in announcing $2.7 million in funding for the project.

The amount consists of $2 million in federal funding and $700,000 in state funding, according to a spokesman for the governor’s office.

MTI President Brian Whitney told Mainebiz that southern Maine and Greater Portland is the desired location for the incubator, which would complement a planned life science innovation center.

Without giving an estimated price tag for the planned incubator, Whitney said that “we will be providing just a portion of the expected overall cost,” and that the state funding aims to act as an incentive for the future developer or operator.

A 26-page request for proposals invites responses from qualified and experienced organizations with proven track records in developing and operating world-class biotechnology and life sciences incubators and shared laboratory facilities by July 1.

In Tuesday's announcement, Whitney aid his organization is hopeful of attracting "a number of quality proposals" and hopes to cut the ribbon on the new facility before the end of 2026.

The Maine Life Sciences Incubator Program is a federally funded partnership between MTI and the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development.

"We are excited to collaborate with MTI on this life sciences incubator project," said DECD Commissioner Mike Duguay. "It will help fill an existing gap in life sciences infrastructure in Maine in a sector with well-paying jobs that is growing faster than the New England average."
