New Limerick plant temporary lays off 76

Weak demand for its current line of building material has led Louisiana-Pacific Corporation to temporarily lay off 76 people at its New Limerick plant.

The layoffs took effect Sunday and are scheduled to last until March 17, when the plant is set to begin production on a new product line, the Bangor Daily News reported. Mary Cohn, a spokesperson for Nashville-based LP, told the paper that "very poor market conditions" led the plant to halt production of its oriented strand board. The laid-off employees will return in March to begin production on its new laminated strand lumber product line, which LP officials say will increase design flexibility and decrease labor costs for builders.

The plant was expanded in September 2006 to convert the site to laminated strand lumber production, making it LP's only manufacturer of the product and one of the few laminated strand lumber producers in North America, according to the paper.
