The OceanView at Falmouth retirement community has broken ground on an expansion that will add 34 apartments and three independent cottages, plus underground parking.

“We’re so proud to begin this new chapter for our community,” said John Wasileski, OceanView's owner. “The project has been carefully planned to meet the continued growing demand, while also reflecting our commitment to environmentally responsible development.”

The new residences will run on solar power, relying on generation from two solar farms.

Construction is targeted for completion by the end of 2026.

The project team includes Freeport-based Zachau Construction; Salas O’Brien, a Portland-based engineering firm; and Gawron Turgeon Dillon Architects, of Scarborough.

OceanView at Falmouth occupies 80 acres at 20 Blueberry Lane off of Middle Road and offers independent living, assisted living and memory care. With its sister community, Cumberland Crossing, there are more than 500 residents and a staff of 200.

‘Principles in action’

The expansion will include a four-story apartment building with 14 independent living units and underground parking at what will be known as Blueberry Commons.

Also part of the project is the addition of Evergreen Commons complex with three two-story apartment buildings, which will add 20 new independent living units and three cottages with attached garages.

Staff and community members who wielded shovels at the groundbreaking included Dr. Nirav Shah, a Maine gubernatorial candidate who formerly served as director of the Maine Center for Disease Control & Prevention and deputy director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.

“We talk about the ideal of aging in place in a safe, healthy, walkable and sustainable community,” he said. “But here at OceanView, we see those principles in action. This expansion and modernization project is a milestone not just for OceanView, but for the entire state of Maine.”
