PUC gives FairPoint deal final nod

The Maine Public Utilities Commission on Friday granted final approval to FairPoint Communication's proposed acquisition of Verizon's wireline business in Maine, according to a press release from FairPoint.

Charlotte, N.C.-based FairPoint's acquisition is part of a deal in which FairPoint would acquire Verizon's wireline business in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. The deal has already received final approval from the Federal Communications Commission, but final approval still needs to be granted by the Vermont Public Service Board and the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission. New Hampshire's PUC will consider the deal today, according to the New Hampshire Union Leader.

The Maine PUC also on Friday stipulated that even if Verizon sells its wireline business in Maine, it would continue its investigation into Verizon's alleged abuses of customer privacy, according to a press release from the Maine Civil Liberties Union. Since 2006, the PUC has been investigating whether or not Verizon handed over customer information to the federal government in connection with its warrant-less wiretapping case.
