Brunswick hospital ends maternity care

Parkview Adventist Medical Center in Brunswick will soon close its maternity ward after almost 50 years because of a decrease in patients.

The hospital announced Friday it will eliminate the ward -- which sees about 1,700 patients and currently serves 100 pregnant women -- on Feb. 29 because of an aging population, steepening competition, fewer patients and the approaching closing of the Brunswick Naval Air Station, according to the Brunswick Times Record. BNAS employees and families account for some 30% of the patient load in the maternity ward, which opened in 1959.

About 19 employees will be affected by the ward closure and will receive severance packages and job retraining, according to the paper. The hospital says it is doing well despite the maternity ward's challenges.
