Three of Maine's private liberal arts colleges rank among the country's top 25 in U.S. News & World Report's 2020 ranking published this week.

Bowdoin College, which has a 207-acre campus in Brunswick, was the star among the trio, coming in at No. 6 on the list of national liberal arts colleges.

Colby College, based in Waterville, was ranked No. 11, while Bates College, of Lewiston, was ranked No. 21.

Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., topped the overall list of liberal arts colleges, followed by Amherst (Mass.) College; Swarthmore (Pa.) College and Wellesley (Mass.) College, which were tied in the No. 3 spot; and Pomona College in Claremont, Calif., at No. 5.

U.S. News & World Report has been ranking colleges for over three decades, and says it compares institutions from across the country on 15 measures of academic quality. Statistics used to calculate rankings include average ACT and SAT scores of admitted students, student-faculty ratios and graduation rates.

Princeton University is No. 1 among national universities. It's followed by Harvard (No. 2); Columbia , Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Yale (tied at No. 3), Stanford, University of Chicago and University of Pennsylvania (tied at No. 6) and Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. (No. 7).

Good showings in North region sub-category

Maine colleges also had a good showing in U.S. News & World Report's so-called Carnegie classification of regional colleges in the North that grant fewer than half of their degrees in liberal arts disciplines, accounting for two of the top 10 on that list.

Maine Maritime Academy, based in Castine, was No. 5 in the North region, while the University of Maine at Farmington was No. 8.

"We are proud that the Maine Maritime Academy student experience — based in rigorous academics, hands-on training, and career preparation — consistently receives recognition for educational quality, value, and outcomes,” said Maine Maritime Academy President William J. Brennan in a statement emailed to Mainebiz on Tuesday.

UMF issued a press release with its reaction on Monday.

"We are thrilled that UMF continues to be nationally recognized among the top public colleges for quality and affordability," said UMF President Edward Serna. "Our mission has always been to provide opportunity to educational excellence for our students from Maine and beyond."

He added: "These rankings are more than an annual benchmark, they are a reflection of what everyone at UMF continually strives for every day — our students' success."
