UMaine system mulls tuition hike

The University of Maine System is considering a tuition hike for the coming academic year.

System trustees will consider raising tuition for full-time Maine undergraduate students by an average of 5.7% at a meeting Monday, according to the Kennebec Journal. The increases would range from 5.3% at the University of Maine at Augusta to a 6% jump at the University of Southern Maine. If trustees approve the hike, tuition at the universities for full-time Maine undergraduates for the 2009-2010 academic year will range from $6,000 to $7,712, according to the paper. "Tuition increases are the revenue sources of last resort," John Diamond, system spokesman, told the paper.

System officials last year increased tuition for the 2008-2009 academic year by 10.8%, and then agreed to keep future tuition hikes to a system-wide average of 6%.
