Upgrades planned for Darling's Waterfront Pavilion
Big changes are on their way to the 16,000-capacity Darling’s Waterfront Pavilion in Bangor as the venue’s summer concert season gears up for its first series of shows.
Among the upgrades planned for the waterfront venue is the installation of a new wooden fence surrounding the outdoor amphitheater and a much-needed replacement to the current chain-link fence that is covered with a blue-tarp during the concert season. In addition to being called an eyesore by concert organizers, city officials and attendees, holes are often ripped into the material so that people can get a free peek into the events, according to the Bangor Daily News.
Waterfront Concerts and the city of Bangor are also looking into possible upgrades to the toilet facilities in the venue. Currently, the less-than-ideal setup is a line of portable toilets, but the city and concert promoters are working with the New York City-based FTL Design Engineering Studio to find a more permanent solution, with prefabricated modular units proposed as one option.
“I think that those folks, including our patrons, deserve some bathrooms, deserve just better fan amenities, better concession areas, a better overall experience on the waterfront,” promoter Alex Gray told the BDN.
Another upgrade project is currently underway for the venue, as the city and Waterfront Concerts are splitting the estimated $495,000 construction costs for the construction of a road near Hollywood Casino that leads to a backstage parking area for performers.
The city and Waterfront Concerts is still calculating the cost for the other pair of projects. Tanya Emery, Bangor’s director of economic and community development, told the BDN that it’s likely that the city will pay for most of the changes through its downtown tax increment financing funds.
