Witham Family Hotels, a  hospitality company that’s headquartered in Ellsworth but has most of its hotel portfolio in Bar Harbor, has construction underway on a Home2 Suites by Hilton at 6 Downeast Highway, also known as High Street.

The firm has held the vacant land for 15 years. It’s adjacent to Witham’s Hampton Inn at 4 Downeast Highway.

The company also has seven hotels in Bar Harbor.

Positioned as an extended-stay property, the Home2 Suites will have 83 suites and amenities such as in-room kitchenettes, a guest laundry, fitness center and complimentary breakfast.

The company expects the property will create 20 to 25 full-time, year-round jobs.

The hotel “represents continued growth and opportunity” for the company, said David C. Witham, CEO of Witham Family Hotels.

Extended-stay market

Witham Family Hotels was founded in 1987 by David C.’s father, David J. Witham. The company has 494 year-round and seasonal employees across the portfolio. Of that, 147 are full-time and part-time year-round employees.

In Bar Harbor, the portfolio consists of the Acadia Inn, Atlantic Oceanside Hotel and Event Center, Bar Harbor Grand Hotel, Bar Harbor Inn, Bar Harbor Motel, Bar Harbor Villager Motel and the recently acquired Bayview Hotel, a 26-room boutique, waterfront property.

The Ellsworth Hampton Inn was built in 2010. Both the Hampton and the site for the Home2 Suites are situated on the main corridor to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park.

The project is internally financed; the cost was not disclosed. The architect is Newcomer Associates in Chambersburg, Pa. The firm specializes in Hilton properties.

Wright-Ryan Construction is the general contractor and has worked with Witham on  several projects, including a recent employee housing development on Kebo Street in Bar Harbor.

The opening is expected in 2026.

The extended-stay segment is the fastest-growing in hospitality and is underserved in the Ellsworth area, Witham told Mainebiz.

Potential guests include traveling nurses, construction crews, Jackson Lab employees and leisure travelers.

Elsewhere in Ellsworth, Stone Park Properties identified long- and short-term stays as a market for construction that recently wrapped up of its 72-unit hotel-style property, a mile down the road at 377 High St.
