Community colleges expand rural reach

The Maine Community College System yesterday announced plans to invest $6.2 million to expand educational opportunities in rural Maine.

The community college system plan to fund a $5 million scholarship for students in rural areas, expand distance-learning opportunities and offer more classes to high school students, among other measures. Most of the new and expanded programs will launch by fall 2008, Helen Pelletier, MCCS spokesperson, told Mainebiz.

MCCS is funding the initiative with a $3.5 million grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation in San Francisco, as well as grants from the TD Banknorth Charitable Foundation and the Betterment Fund in New York.
