Harvard VP is new Bates president

Bates College in Lewiston has hired Harvard University official A. Clayton Spencer as its new president, effective July 1.

The college yesterday announced the hiring of Spencer, who is currently vice president for policy at Harvard, the Sun Journal reported. She previously served as executive dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, and was a lecturer at Harvard's Graduate School of Education. She has degrees from Williams College and Oxford, as well as a master's in religion from Harvard and a law degree from Yale.

Spencer replaces Elaine Tuttle Hansen, who stepped down earlier this year to become executive director of The Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth. Nancy Cable, vice president and dean of enrollment and external affairs, has been serving as interim president since July.
