Portland-based InterMed put shovels in the ground this week for its fifth facility, its first in decades, at the Downs in Scarborough.

The 62,000-square-foot ambulatory surgery center and medical office building is being built in the 577-acre mixed-use development’s emerging town center, at 277 Scarborough Downs Road.

The range of services to be offered include both urgent and primary care, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, outpatient surgery, imaging and laboratory services.

InterMed’s largest facility is on Marginal Way in Portland. It has two additional locations in South Portland, and a fourth facility in downtown Yarmouth.

In a statement, InterMed's communications manager Kate Hilscher said, “The project is designed to expand access to integrated medical care for patients in one of InterMed’s fastest-growing service areas.”

The Downs already has over 620 homes, and 1,400 more are on the horizon. Also within the development are 50 businesses, including sites for IDEXX Laboratories and Costco, with a total of 1,000 employees. Allagash Brewery has recently opened a taproom, a fitness center is under construction, and Market Basket grocery chain plans to open an 80,000-square-foot store next year.

The new InterMed building is a joint project with Remedy Medical Properties, a real estate development firm based in Chicago.

Scarborough-based Landry/French Construction will be building the new facility.
