Maine high schools score high in US News ranking

A new ranking of the country’s best high schools gives high marks to a few in Maine — and maybe another draw for families considering relocation.

The No. 1 school in Maine is Greely High in Cumberland, according to this year’s ranking by U.S. News & World Report, published Tuesday.

The 2022 top spot is the third in a row for Greely, which placed No. 1,178 among 17,840 schools ranked by the magazine publisher nationwide.

Of the 113 schools evaluated in Maine, the top 10 are:

  1. Greely High School, Cumberland
  2. Kennebunk High School
  3. Maine School of Science & Mathematics, Limestone
  4. Cape Elizabeth High School
  5. Falmouth High School
  6. Camden Hills Regional High School, Rockport
  7. Yarmouth High School
  8. Greenville Consolidated School
  9. Katahdin Middle/High School, Stacyville
  10. Scarborough High School.

Greely wasn’t the only repeat honoree. Kennebunk ranked No. 2 in 2021, and Cape Elizabeth, Falmouth and Camden Hills were in the top 10. Other schools such as Yarmouth also have also scored high in recent years.

U.S. News has previously ranked Maine School of Science & Mathematics not only as best in the state, but among the best in the country. The magnet school in Limestone was No. 12 nationally in 2008, and placed in the top 50 two other times.

But this year, Maine schools scored more modestly.

Greely was the only high school in the state to rank in the top 10% of scorers nationally. Only 17 of the Maine schools made the country’s top 50%.

Within Maine’s three largest cities, Bangor High School was tops, at No. 13 statewide.

Portland High School ranked No. 52, and also in Portland, Baxter Academy for Technology & Science was No. 20 and Casco Bay High School, No. 34. The city’s Deering High School and Lewiston High School both placed below No. 54, without individual ranks.

The No. 1 high school in the country, according to U.S. News, is Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Va.

U.S. News based its comparison on criteria including students’ college readiness, state assessments, underserved student performance, curriculum breadth and graduation rates. The magazine adjusted its scoring to account for the impact of the pandemic in 2019-20, and obtained all data from public, third-party sources.
