Task force: 1,000 turbines in ME by 2020

A state task force says Maine should become a leader in alternative energy use by installing at least 1,000 wind turbines by 2020.

The Governor's Task Force on Wind Power will release a plan this week that calls for Maine to generate 3,000 megawatts of wind power by 2020, R. Alec Giffen, director of the Maine Forest Service and task force chair, told Mainebiz this morning. To meet that goal, the state would need to install at least 1,000 turbines, Giffen said.

The plan also says Maine should require wind power developers to "realize tangible benefits" for Maine residents, by making payments to towns hosting turbines, for example, Giffen said.

Gov. John Baldacci created the task force last May to study wind power's potential in Maine. After Baldacci receives the report, he'll decide how to proceed with the recommendations.
