UMaine Machias scores aquaculture grant

The University of Maine at Machias has won a $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to study the potential aquaculture market for blue mussels and Arctic surf clams in Maine.

The grant provides two years of funding for researchers at the Downeast Institute for Applied Marine Research and Education and will include collaboration with aquaculture companies Cooke Aquaculture and A.C. Inc.

Researchers and the companies will focus on producing those species of shellfish for commercial markets.

Brian Beal, a professor of marine ecology at the university and the lead investigator on the grant, said the award will provide “a significant boost to our work in supporting regional economic development through applied research and innovation.”

Beal is also the leader of a related study that won a separate $100,000 grant from the Maine Economic Improvement Fund Small Campus Initiative with Cooke Aquaculture earlier this year.
