UMF plans cuts

The University of Maine at Farmington will lay off support staff and shift faculty assignments to balance its $28 million annual budget.

Theodora Kalikow, UMF's president, said yesterday that the school will shave $1 million off its $28 million budget by laying off support staff, shifting faculty assignments and reducing adjunct teaching staff, according to the Central Maine Morning Sentinel. Four support staff positions will be eliminated and another three will be reduced to part time, but no academic programs will be affected, according to the paper.

The cuts, which will be effective July 1, are being made because of significant funding pressures at the state level, Kalikow said at a press conference, according to the paper.
