Artist-run pop-up gallery finds a more permanent home in Portland

After several years of hosting pop-up galleries in Portland, Maine Art Collective has secured a three-year lease on a 1,676-square-foot space at 7-9 Moulton St. in the Old Port.

The new space will open to customers this Friday.

The short-term gallery space the collective has been operating for three years at 157 Middle St. will stay open possibly through December, unless the landlord leases the space,” gallery founder Sue Vittner told Mainebiz.

The collective had been able to find short-term rentals due to a sluggish retail market, opening its first Portland location in 2021 in a former Lululemon store at 18 Exchange St., a spot which traditionally had been in high demand.

For several years the artists’ group has also had temporary leases on retail properties in Ogunquit. Maine Art Collective is operating there now at 119 Perkins Cove until Dec. 15, when the gallery will close for the winter season.

The collectives are jointly owned and managed by a group of emerging artists, who staff the galleries and share in a larger percentage of the profits from the sale of their works, than traditional galleries. The group is also able to sell works at lower prices than many other galleries.

Peter Harrington of Malone Commercial Brokers arranged the lease at 7-9 Moulton St. Terms were not disclosed.
