Base closure cost exceeds savings

The estimated cost of closing the Brunswick Naval Air Station has climbed to nearly $300 million, almost $107 million more than originally estimated, according to the Defense Department's fiscal year 2009 budget.

The budget estimates that the one-time cost of closing the base is $299.8 million between 2006 and 2011, when the base is scheduled to close, The Times Record reported. That's $107 million more than the $193.1 million cost the Base Realignment and Closure commission estimated when it decided to close the base in 2005, and $53 million more than estimated in the 2008 budget.

This $300 million cost exceeds the nearly $222 million the federal government expects to save from the base closure, The Times Record reported.
