Freaky Bean buys Maine Roasters

Increasing its breadth in southern Maine, the Freaky Bean Coffee Company has purchased Maine Roasters Coffee's wholesale business and two of its coffee shops in Yarmouth and Falmouth.

With the purchase, Freaky Bean Coffee Co. has emerged as the biggest independent coffee retailer in Maine ˆ– a feat considering it just opened in Scarborough 18 months ago, the Portland Press Herald reported. The deal has more than doubled Freaky Bean's work force from 20 to 57. Freaky Bean now owns a roasting operation and four coffee shops and plans to open two more in Scarborough and South Portland next year.

The company also sells coffee wholesale to coffeehouses around the country. Jon Stratton, president of Freaky Bean, told the newspaper that the growth of his company will lead people to see it as "the hottest thing." The sale price was undisclosed.
