Verizon CEO meets with Guv

Governor John Baldacci met last week with the CEO of Verizon, who wanted to discuss the company's potential sale of its landline business in northern New England to FairPoint Communications.

Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg requested a meeting with Baldacci after the staff at the Maine Public Utilities Commission recommended the sale of Verizon's 1.5 million landlines in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont to FairPoint be halted. Baldacci has not taken a stand on the deal, but Seidenberg wanted to discuss the company's interest in moving forward with the sale and how the sale would affect Verizon's presence in Maine, according to the Kennebec Journal. Even if the sale goes through, Verizon will continue to serve wireless customers and businesses in Maine.

The report from the PUC's staff said the sale's risks outweigh any potential benefits. The three-member commission, which is not required to accept the staff recommendation, is expected to make a decision Dec. 13.
