Maine manufacturing jobs down

Maine lost over 2,000 industrial jobs in 2007, more than seven times the number lost in 2006, according to an industrial directory released yesterday.

The 2008 Maine Manufacturers Register found that Maine's industrial employment dropped 2.6% since December 2006, with a loss of 2,120 industrial jobs and 24 manufacturers, according to a press release. Last year, Manufacturers' News found that Maine lost 287 industrial jobs between 2005 and 2006. Maine has 2,582 manufacturers that employ 77,370 workers, according to the release.

The report, released annually by Evanston, Ill.-based Manufacturers' News Inc., says that job cuts at Bath Iron Works contributed to a 7% drop in employment in the transportation equipment sector, which accounts for the most manufacturing jobs in Maine. Jobs in the lumber and wood sector, Maine's second largest industrial employer, fell 2.5%. Employment in the industrial machinery and equipment sector, however, rose by more than 4% over the last year.
